Matti Vainio Exhibition "Findings | Leiud"
UNIVERSITY OF TARTU CENTRE FOR ARTS GALLERY
Uppsala 10, I and II floor, Mon–Fri at 11–17
Opening on 15 September at 6 PM. The exhibition remains open until 11 November 2020.
Art experience can be compared with being lost or wandering around in the forest. There is a saying by John Muir: "And into the forest I go, to lose my mind and find my soul." To Matti Vainio, it is an excellent starting point to create and view artworks: "This quote by Muir inspires us to wander in the hope of finding out new ideas and, best of all, our true Self."
"I have always been interested in finding out new ways to express thoughts and ideas through Fine Arts. I think it is one of the key elements of creating artworks in general, and artworks that are trying to cross interdisciplinary borders in particular. "Finding" – according to Cambridge Dictionary it is a word that means "information that can turn old ideas on their head, or can bring puzzling and unexpected information". So, a search for knowledge deals with uncertainty, order and chaos. In other words, what you may find out is how to put chaos into order."
The exhibition "Findings" consists of drawings, paintings, woodcut, video and thread works. Vainio looks back in time and combines art historical elements with contemporary approaches. He is exploring multiple technical as well as ideological approaches in order to understand physical and metaphysical levels of human being and life itself.
Matti Vainio (born 1978) graduated as an artist from Turku Arts Academy in 2003 and received his Master of Arts degree in Art and Design from Aalto University in 2013. Vainio works with different media: drawing, painting, performances. He has collaborated with different art collectives since 2003. His art explores an individual's possibilities within the society, and wonders upon phenomena of everyday life. Vainio's artistic strategy is to create emotionally rich art pieces that afford perceiving the difficulty of encountering Self and other people. Vainio's works have been shown in Finland, Sweden, England, Russia, Germany, and Estonia. His latest shows took place at KIASMA Contemporary Art Museum of Finland and in Estonia Vabaduse gallery. Vainio also works as a lecturer in the University of Tartu Centre for Arts.
