Olga & Priit Pärn Exhibition "Happy Moments" ("Õnnelikud hetked")
UNIVERSITY OF TARTU LIBRARY 2nd floor
W. STRUVE 1, Mon-Fri 9–21, Sat-Sun 12–18
3 May–13 June 2021
On 3rd May, the world-renowned animators and University of Tartu 2020/21 Professors of Liberal Arts, Olga and Priit Pärn, open their exhibition "Happy Moments" ("Õnnelikud hetked") at the University of Tartu Library 2nd floor exhibition hall.
For this exhibition the Pärns have picked out 50 screenshots from four of their animated films: "Hotel E" (1992), "Life without Gabriella Ferri" (2008), "Divers in the Rain" (2010), and "Pilots on the Way Home" (2014).
As the professors-as-artists say, it is an exhibition that presents what cinema has presented. Deciding on which images shall be exhibited could not have been an easy task. "In those four films there are about 162 720 shots altogether; the selected 50 screenshots equal 0,0307% of all shots. Without exaggeration we can say that, for every image there is at the exhibition, making it into the selection was like winning the lottery," admits Priit Pärn.
Every snapshot is a moment frozen in time, and reminds the filmmakers the exact time when this or that particular moment was created ‒ either with their own hands, or with their team's hands. "For an animated film artist those moments of creation are very happy, especially later when you look back on those times," says Pärn. "So it became clear to us what to call this exhibition. The alternative title would have been: "Stay Still! ‒ Let Me Have a Look!"
Since all four animated films a very well known, visitors have a chance to test themselves on whether they, too, remember these particular shots and/or moments.
The exhibition at the UT library remains open until 13 June.
