Instruction in English or in double languages (Estonian and English).
All practical art courses offered by the Center for Arts allow students the flexibility to pose and solve various tasks based on one's preparedness, personality and level of skills because the supervising and instructing is largely individual.
The university provides students with easels, planks and trestles.
Depending on the course, students need to acquire necessary materials themselves. For example: paper, cardboard, canvas, pencils, eraser, painting supplies (paints, brushes, palette, cups and cloths), charcoal, thumbtack or scotch tape, protective gear such as apron, gown and gloves. Information that is more detailed is available in the description of the specific course and/or upon registering to the course.
SPRING SEMESTER 2020/2021 COURSES
NEW! Space Intervention
HVVK.14.150, 3 ECTS
Lecturer: Carlos Hernán Guzmán
How do people use space? How does space influence us? How to influence people by space?
This course aims to develop a critical vision of space by exploring the ways people make use of and are influenced by space in their everyday life. The course provides the students with the conceptual and technical skills and tools to plan and implement space intervention projects with an artistic or urbanistic purpose, thus generating experiences that change the way people perceive and interact in a selected space.
Experimental Painting
HVVK.14.121, 3 ECTS
Lecturer: Maarja Nõmmik
The aim of this course is to provide an overview of various experimental painting techniques and give students the chance to experiment with these in practice. Examples from (experimental) art history and contemporary art are also discussed in class.
It is a course about looking for and trying out unconventional ways and possibilities to make and see art. Experimental painting as such is thus an effective tool for improving one's ability of creative thinking – an asset in today's academic world and outside.
Without any prerequisites everyone is welcome to come and let their experimentality flow. Students must bring their own paints, brushes and other necessary tools, depending on the nature of the experimental work they wish to carry out.
Self-portrait
HVVK.14.116, 3 ECTS
Lecturer: Maarja Nõmmik
To whom: This course is open for all students. The experience of drawing, sketching or painting will be useful, but you can also participate without prior experience.
The course teaches to recognise and draw facial features and expressions based on your face.
As a person perceives and feels his/her face the best, it is a gratifying tool for learning about different forms of face and personality. In addition, your face allows you to play through countless expressions and emotions that are also felt inside. Therefore, self-portrait is one of the sincerest portrait types. As a result of sketches and drafts, at least two self-portraits will be produced during the course. There will also be examples of self-portraits from art history and contemporary art introduced during the course.
Necessary materials for the participant: personal work equipment according to your preference and possibilities. More information from the lecturer.
Looking at Art
HVVK.14.087, 3 ECTS
Lecturer: Matti Vainio
To whom: For everyone who is interested to develop the skills of interpreting works of art and in deepening their knowledge about the story behind an artwork and art exhibition as well as looking at the multi-layered relationships between art and contemporary societies.
The course will take you to exhibition halls and galleries to meet the artwork. Mythological minimalism and the ironic reality in painting with its relation to the critique of consumerism are just some of the possible topics under discussion in the seminars.
This course helps to deepen the comprehension of artworks via different angles, for example through studying the artists' techniques and how they are connected to the present time. We look how a curated or artist-made exhibition influences the perceptions of the viewer.
The students will be keeping a diary the whole time and the course will conclude with a written work. PS! Please consider the cost of some exhibition visits in your budget.
Painting Course – Nude
HVVK.14.142, 3 ECTS
Lecturer: Veiko Klemmer
The aim of this course is to introduce the principles of realistic painting, to learn about possibilities of depicting a human figure, and to develop one's own artistic sensibility and style.
Through practical work, body parts, portraits and full figures will be studied and painted in accordance with the participants' individual interests and the instructor's recommendations. Next to practical art work the dilemmas of creativity are discussed, e.g. the line between knowledge and experience, realistic and symbolic depiction, discipline and freedom, legibility and self-expression, originality and culture.
The course is individually instructed, and thus suits for all levels of skill. Materials cost about 30€ per semester.
Medical Sculpture
HVVK.14.126, 3 ECTS
Lecturer: Rauno Thomas Moss
To whom: The course is mainly for medicine students. However, anyone interested in acquiring the basics of medical sculpture modelling and plastics, and in developing manual skills for handling clay and gypsum, is warmly welcome!
Practical work involves modelling a 1:1 clay human skull and musculature based on the standard principles of anatomy. Through practical work, anatomical terminology will be repeated and more easily memorised. After finishing the muscle head, first a negative gypsum mould will be taken, then a positive mould. The practical assignment ends with the cleaning and finishing of the clay skull.
Through plastic modelling, this course develops spatial proportioning, analytical and manual skills, as well as skills of handling the materials, and of taking negative and positive moulds.
Please take an apron with you to protect your clothes!
Practical Composition
HVVK.14.120, 3 ECTS
Lecturers: Rauno Thomas Moss (theory), Veiko Klemmer (practice)
The course is divided into two parts: The theoretical part provides basic knowledge about the theory of composition, terminology and analysis in the form of extensively illustrated lectures.
