Professor of Liberal Arts
The position of the Professor of Liberal Arts was created in 1993 to develop spirituality and creativity of the University and city community. One of the most prominent Estonian artists is invited as visiting Professor of Liberal Arts, whose activities relate to the traditional fields of activity of the University of Tartu.
The Professor of Liberal arts is called for one academic year. The same person may be called up only once.

In 2019/2020 Dr. Kärt Summatavet is the Professor of Liberal Arts
Kärt Summatavet has a Doctor of Arts degree, she is a jewellery designer and graphic artist, whose creative work is inspired by the mythological world view of Estonians and other Finno-Ugric peoples.
Dean of the UT Faculty of Arts and Humanities in 2013-2019, Prof. Margit Sutrop says that Kärt Summatavet is an excellent example of how research and creative work can be combined. “Research on the cultural heritage of Estonia has added depth and expressiveness to her jewellery creations,” said Sutrop.
This year, for the first time in the professorship history there are also seminars for the international community in English.
In Autumn Semester Dr. Kärt Summatavet held two seminars in English titled „Inspiration and Innovation. Key to Estonian Oral Tradition and Folk Culture“.
In Spring Semester everyone is welcome to register and participate at the seminar HVVK.14.122 "Creative Inspiration Sources and Memory Landscapes: tradition, inspiration, innovation."
The aim of the course is improving creativity and the entrepreneurial spirit through the creative analysis of the linguistic and cultural heritage of Nordic peoples, in order to find innovative solutions to future problems in different fields.
