Dugout canoe */**
Teacher: Priit-Kalev Parts
Priit-Kalev Parts (b 1972) acquired his canoe-making skills from one of the last skill-bearers in Eastern Europe, Jaan Rahumaa on 1995. Since then, Priit-Kalev has made over ten canoes with different masters and his students.
Priit-Kalev has been an initiator of several woodworking and traditional building study programs on vocational and university level, craft societies, and publications. Over ten years, he was teaching and managing Estonian Native Construction program at UT Viljandi Culture Academy. Since 2017, he is free-lance craftsman and craft-entrepreneur, and part-time docent.
A dugout canoe is a boat made from a hollowed tree trunk, in Northern Europe and Northern Asia, mainly out of aspen. In Northern Europe, the tradition of making dugout canoes survived into the 20th and 21st centuries without intergenerational break only in Estonia. There are several types of dugouts. On current course, the more advanced version, a light and elegant canoe with thin bent borders (ca 2 cm), which can be easily moved by one man, is taught.
All key phases of dugout canoe making (giving outer shape for the trunk, determining board-line, digging, bending, finishing) are going to be covered during the course. Since four days is too short period for completing a canoe, several pre-fabricated workpieces are used in order to give a comprehensive overview of the process. Course will finish with bending canoe shell into final shape with fire and hot water.
All course materials and tools are included in the patricipation fee. Main tools used are axes, adzes, planes, and to a less extent, chainsaws. Some special hard-to-find tools like adzes can be bought on course, if one wishes.
As a result of the course, there will be no secrets on canoe-making left for a participant – for making one's own boat, only a trunk and stamina will be needed. This workshop is suitable for beginners, although basic experience on woodworking is recommended.
The course will open only if there is enough participants who wish to participate on all 4 days! In case the minimum number is fulfilled, the others can join on single days of the course:
Day 1 - giving a trunk outer canoe shape
Day 2 - determining board-line of the canoe, rough digging
Day 3 ja day 4 - giving the trunk inner shape, final digging + spreading finished workpiece into canoe shape (can be chosen only together)
NB! In step 2 registration form, you will find the course divided into separate days. Please choose different days of the course from different drop-down menues in order to participate during the whole 4-day program.
