Kihnu "tip" decorations *
Teachers: Liina Laaneoja, Annika Vaalma
We are the company Etnowerk - Estonian brand of handcrafted cardigans full of emotion, bold beauty and ethnographic motifs. Our handicraft education is from UT Viljandi Culture Academy.
Annika is the embroidery queen. She makes the finest embroideries to decorate knitwear. Inspiration comes from folk costumes and the outcome is modern clothing for a modern woman.
Liina is the master of colors and bold decorations. She mixes crocheted ethnographic laces with different textiles and uses these combinations on knitwear. The colorful result makes everyone happy – both the wearers and the admirers.
Ladies from Kihnu island have very clever and sparing attitude for using everything left from making clothes to create something new out of these pieces of fabric.
In this workshop we show how to use 4 x 4 cm cotton pieces to make Kihnu "tip" decorations. Historically this technique was used on cotton jackets Kihnu ladies wear with their striped skirt but this wonderful decoration can be used on different items. If you also wish to participate in Kihnu calico jacket workshop, you can first make the tips for your jacket andthen sew it in the following 2-day workshop.
In this workshop we make "tips" and use them on a shopping bag (pre-made for you). Once back home, you can continue to make more "tips" to decorate different items. The participation fee includes a pre-sewn shopping bag and cotton fabrics for the "tips". This workshop is suitable for beginners.
