Estonian natural dyes *
Teacher: Liis Luhamaa
Liis Luhamaa has a master´s degree in biology and has been dyeing with natural dyes over 10 years. She is studying at UT Viljandi Culture Academy MA curriculum of Native Crafts. She is a self-taught and self-employed handicrafter. Liis has been teaching natural dye and indigo workshops for years as she loves to introduce the colourful world of natural dyes to the others.
In this workshop you will learn how to dye woollen yarn with plants – how to choose and collect dye plants, how to prepare a dye bath and how to premordant and dye yarns. The most important dye plants of Estonia are introduced.
Participants will dye yarns in several dye baths. You will learn how to dye with nothern bedstraw roots to get „madarapunane” - the most essential and powerful red dye in Estonian traditional textiles.
Every participant will get samples of all the yarns dyed during the workshop and a small skein of alum-mordanted yarn (included in the participation fee). Workshop is suitable for beginners.
