Jaak Kikas’ exhibition “STUDIA BOTANICA” at the Centre for Arts Gallery
Uppsala 10, I and II floor
Opening on April 11 at 4 PM. The exhibition remains open until May 31, 2019.
Jaak Kikas is a physicist, Professor of Disordered Systems Physics at the University of Tartu. He has been actively involved in popularizing science (main prize at the Estonian Science Popularization Competition 2009, and a Friend of Science Journalism in 2015 in Estonia). In addition to research and teaching at the University's Institute of Physics, he has given lectures and courses on intersection of science and arts at the University of Tartu Centre for Arts, at the Pallas University of Applied Sciences and the Estonian Academy of Arts. Since 2015, however, he has had a number of photo exhibitions in different cities of Estonia, this is his fifth personal solo exhibition.
Jaak Kikas about the exhibition: „The word “botany” in the title of the exhibition refers to the objects depicted, but the substantive impulse of the exhibition is probably based on the desire from childhood, known to all of us, to see what is inside of things. There is no better way to meet this desire than to cut these objects open. That is why the old anatomical theatre is a particularly appropriate and symbolic exposition space for this exhibition. The technical peculiarity is added to the images by the fact that they are made with a scanner instead of a traditional camera.”
