IASJ 2018
2018 IASJ Jazz Meeting in Viljandi, Estonia
Welcome to Viljand! It is a great honour for me to welcome all of you to Viljandi, Estonia, for the 2018 IASJ Jazz Meeting, Monday 2nd till Saturday 7th July. On behalf of the organizing team I can say that we are very proud to host this event because it comes in sync with everything we believe in: with our passion for music, with our longstanding desire to make our contribution, whenever possible, to the arts, and with our support and trust in the power of youth. IASJ friends,
It is my privilege to be invited to serve as Artistic Director in Dave Liebman’s absence for the 2018 IASJ Jazz Meeting in Viljandi, Estonia. The IASJ meeting continues to be a wonderful opportunity to reunite old friends and colleagues, as well as forge new collaborations that can be transformative for our schools, students and curriculums. It has certainly been the most wonderful facilitator of musical and educational friendships for me over the last eight years or so; colleagues whom I simply would not have met had it not been for the IASJ. Moving forward, the organisation can play an even more vital role in maintaining a strong global network through which we can share ideas about pedagogy, discuss the many challenges we’re facing, and establish exchanges for staff and students alike. We will make time to discuss all of these important issues when we are together.
I’d like to thank Tuulike Kivestu and her team who have worked hard to organise another great IASJ Jazz Meeting, and the facilities and location sound wonderful - I hope to pay a visit in the Spring to see for myself ahead of the 2018 IASJ Jazz Meeting. I believe it should also be one of the relatively more affordable meetings, at least as far as Europe goes, so I hope that a great many of you will be able to attend. The IASJ, and the yearly meetings, are only as good as its members make it, so thank you in advance for your input and support for what I’m sure will be a wonderful week, and I very much look forward to seeing you all there.
