Dance week in Viljandi County
From 23 to 29 April, modern dance art in presented in Viljandi County at the initiation of Culture Academy lecturers in celebration of International Dance Day on 29 April. The aim of the dance week, taking place for the 11th time, is to introduce different forms of this art that induce thinking and movement to people of all ages and backgrounds.
The dance week includes performances, diploma productions, movie nights, photo exhibitions, training and school programmes, the night university and many other dance-related activities. There will also be new graduate productions of the UT Viljandi Culture Academy, debut productions of STL Premiere ’16, Tallinn Dance Theatre’s “Ikoonid. J. S. Bach” and performances by other guests from near and far. At the same time, members of the Writing Movement, a network of dance reviewers of the Nordic and Baltic countries, are also in Viljandi.
Special attention is always given to young people who will once again have the opportunity to learn about modern dance art through the school programme “Thinking Dancers”. In addition to dance performances, school students can participate in contact and creative dance lessons to discover their relation to dance.
The week ends with a dance evening on 29 April in the Viljandi Aircraft Factory. Most dance week events are free of charge thanks to the support of the Cultural Endowment, the Gambling Tax Council, Viljandi City Government and the Union of Viljandi County Municipalities.
