School Jazz Brought Young Jazz Music Pupils to Viljandi
School Jazz=Jazz School is a 3-day workshop that brings together young jazz music pupils from different Estonian Music Schools as well professional musicians offering jazz and rhythm music training and joint jamming sessions. Usually 60-80 pupils participate every year. This time the workshop took place for 9th time.
School Jazz takes place at school's winter holidays at the beginning of January and has very tight schedule. First day starts with traditional opening lecture from well-known person from the field of culture. This year lecture was given by Estonian actor, director and Professor of Theatre Arts Kalju Komissarov. Further days are filled with workshops and concerts.
The main form of 3-day workshop seminar is ensemble work and all pupils are divided into the bands based on their main instrument. Every day ends with the concert and on the last evening the bands formed during the workshop give final concert.
This year programme was instructed by Jaak Sooäär, Kadri Voorand, Joel Rasmus Remmel, Jaan Jaago, Paul Daniel, Mingo Rajandi, Liina Saar, Ahto Abner, Teet Raik, Virgo Sillamaa and Reigo Ahven.
Throughout the years many Estonian well known jazz musicians have been the teachers in School jazz = Jazz School programme: Sirje Medell, Siim Aimla, Raul Vaigla, Marti Tärn, Raivo Tafenau, Tiit Paulus, Andre Maaker, Hedvig Hanson, Urmas Lattikas, Raul Sööt, Mart Soo, Taavo Remmel, Raun Juurikas, Tiit Kikas, Ain Agan, Lembit Saarsalu, Marek Talts, Olav Ehala, Villu Veski and many others.
Many pupils who have taken part of the School Jazz come back for several times as well continue their further studies in music area.
Main organiser of the School Jazz = Jazz School is Aivar Trallmann with academy’s Music Department and Viljandi Music School as main partners where the workshops take place during the days. The evening jamming sessions take place at Estonian Traditional Music Center.
