The Applied Theatre conference
“Drama Connecting People: School and Community”
9–11 November 2017 in Kohtla-Järve, Estonia.
The third international applied theatre conference “Drama Connecting People” (DCP) will be held in November 2017 in the North-East part of Estonia – Kohtla-Järve. Kohtla-Järve is a town mostly inhabited by local Russian-speaking population. Here and there one can spot the remains of lost times: the urban space is saturated by the symbols of its glorious industrial past.
We are holding our DCP conference in Kohtla-Järve because we wish to enforce the communication between the local community and local educational facilities, to strengthen the collaboration across generations and between different cultural/ethnic groups and to enhance cooperative learning, social cohesion and democracy through arts-based methods.
The three-day programme involves the plenary sessions, workshops for different target-groups, presentations, performances and urban excursions. The conference starts on the 9th of November with the From Youth to Youth Theatre Conference at Järve Secondary School. This event is organised together with the students of Viljandi Culture Academy and Järve Secondary School. Also, several other Ida-Virumaa secondary schools (Iisaku, Toila, Ahtme, Järve, Kiviõli II) are invited to cooperate.
The Plenary Session on the 10th of November takes part in the newly renovated Culture Centre of Kohtla-Järve.
The Cultural Boiler is organised on Saturday, 11th of November in Järve Secondary School. This event serves as a platform for interchange: older generations, families and cultural associations of local minorities can share their cultural practices with younger people and vice versa. Several arts-based activities are designed to include people from different age and ethnic groups, including families, cultural and societal associations etc.
Target groups of the DCP conference are researchers, theatre and drama practitioners, teachers, school management, youth workers, students of high schools and universities. Local target groups are elderly people, families, youngsters, artists etc.
The DCP conference is preceded by an international meeting of the network “Beyond Text” in Tallinn from the 7th until the 9th of November. On this meeting, we are trying to find ways to support practitioners and researchers from all disciplines within universities and those in professions and organisations beyond. This meeting brings to Estonia applied theatre practitioners from Spain, Palestine, Finland and UK and many of them are willing to share their best techniques in the field of arts, education and community with Estonian practitioners during the DCP conference. The conference is held in English with Russian translation.
