Participants: 8 – 10 incoming students
The advances of the digital technology in the entertainment industry have ushered us into the dawn of Cinematic VR. At least a half of the currently produced 360° videos globally do not deliver the promised: a credible psychosomatic immersion. An examination of narratology in VR will be the foundation of the workshop using a structuralist approach in its examination of the form.
Narratology, as the study of narratives structures seeks to understand how recurrent elements, themes, and patterns yield a set of universals that determine the makeup of a story. The five-day workshop is aimed at directing and screenwriting students in order to complement their expertise in the traditional school of dramatic construction. Yet, anyone with no, or those with advanced knowledge in narratology, might still benefit as the workshop will address some latest vectors of narratological research.
The workshop will focus on two aspects of narratological research-- Space and Focalization (perspective and voice) as they function in 360° 3D spherical video. Students will decode the best and worst examples of the existing 360° 3D shorts, and will tackle short exercises in the production of 360° 3D spherical video prototypes. Our focus will primarily be on narrative theories and the production of 360° 3D video samples that target issues of SPACE and FOCALIZATION in Cinematic VR. The attendees will be provided with reading materials to be read prior to the commencement of the workshop, and, while not required, may bring their own 360° cameras, if available.
The final work will be a short shot in 360° 3D using Insta360 Pro Ambisonic camera. Depending on the size of the attendees two shorts films may be accomplished; however, due to the heavy rendering and post-production time required, a single piece where everyone has partken, may suffice
The core course work:
• Theoretical approbation of key narrative categories
• Narratological analysis of existing 360° and 360° 3D Films
• 360° video prototypes addressing issues of Space and Focalization
Keywords: Cinematic VR, Narratology, Virtual Reality, Deep Mapping, Directing for VR
Pre-course task: Thorough reading of the materials prior to the commencement of the workshop
Credit points: 3.5 ECTS
Application procedure: Students should send a short letter of motivation and a small portfolio of few selected works electronically: acglobalfilms [ät] gmail.com
